  • What are wheat groats?
  • Wheat groats are organic groats made of wheat grains without germ and bran which are finely crushed, and then polished. This product is considered to be both nutritious and highly digestible.
  • Also called oat berries, whole oat groats are simply hulled whole oat grain kernels. While the term groat often applies to oats, it is not specific to oats, as buckwheat, rye and barley kernels also are called groats.

  • "Groat" is an old Scottish word that referred specifically to oats, but now the term can be applied to any whole kernel of grain that has been minimally processed to remove its outer husk or hull, sometimes called chaff.
  • A groat is another name for a grain kernel. Whole oat groats are the result of simply harvesting oats, cleaning them, and removing their inedible hulls. You can most often find these in health food stores.
  • Parboiled and cut durum wheat groats, known as bulgur, are an essential ingredient of many Middle Eastern dishes such as mansaf and tabbouleh. Groats are also used in some sausages, such as black puddings. A traditional dish from the Black Country in England is groaty pudding (not to be confused with groats pudding).
