Vermicompost, also known as worm compost or worm castings, is a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer and soil amendment produced through the process of composting organic materials with the help of earthworms. The process of vermicomposting begins with the collection of organic waste materials such as kitchen scraps, garden trimmings, and paper products. These materials are then fed to a population of composting worms, typically species such as Eisenia fetida (red worms) or Lumbricus rubellus (red wigglers). These worms consume the organic matter, breaking it down through their digestive systems.
