Cashew Nut Shell Liquid Resns
Introduction: Silex-50 is a Plain Cashew Nut Shell Liquid based Phenolic resins and is processed using special catalyst to cater to the need of various dark & semi dark coloured quick drying paints and primers. The resin has got both air drying and low baking properties and is suitable for making high gloss dark & semi dark coloured paints, primers, anti-termite chemicals and wood varnishes, Black offset printing inks, Insulating Varnishes of outstanding properties particularly in regard to resistance to the water and chemical.
Compatibility: Silex-50 is compatible with all Drying oils, Alkyds, Epoxies, Ester gums, Phenolics, Maleics etc., in all proportion and only to a limited extent in chlorinated resins specially chlorinated rubber. It is not compatible with urea resins.
Solubility: Silex-50 is soluble in Mineral Turpentine oil (MTO) in all proportion. It is also soluble in most of the common paints solvent like Toluene, Xylene, Naphtha’s, Ester etc., but having limited solubility in Epoxies, vinyl & ethyl ketones.
Recommended Driers: Driers such as 0.5% Lead or Zirconium, 0.5% Cobalt and 1.5% Manganese as metal on the solid resin content is recommended. If require the proportion of Manganese can be increased to further 1.0% with beneficial effects. After addition of driers ageing for 24 hours is recommended.
Mode of Supply: It is supplied in 200 kg’s packing’s as 100%, 80%, and 70% solids. For most of the paints and varnishes applications 70% execution is recommended as it has the best film properties & flowable from drums.
Application Technique: Film of Silex-50 can be applied either by brush, spray or flow technique.
Storage: The storage stability is Silex-50 is indefinite if stored in air tight containers in a cool place.
Recommended uses: Silex-50 either alone or in combination with other resins are used for formulating primers, dark coloured enamels and paints, insulating varnishes, knifing putty, Black offset Printing inks and similar other applications including special purpose anti corrosive paints baking composition etc.
Caution: Some times Silex-50 may be used along with basic pigment like Zinc Chrome,
Zinc Oxide, basic lead sulphate etc. It is advised that these pigments are not ground along
with the main pigment in the CNSL resin as there is a possibility of reaction. The reactive
pigments should be added after the grinding for proper dispersion of the Pigment. Hence it
is advisable to grind the main pigments with any Long Oil Alkyd Resin and then add our
CNSL resin outside and stir well to avoid reaction.
Cardanol Based Phenolic Resin
INTRODUCTION: Cashew nut shell liquid contains Phenolic group called ANACARDNIC ACID. CNSL oil is distilled and Card phenol is separated. Card phenol is polymerized and modified with Alkyds, Styrene monomer and Rosin to make different grades of modified Card phenol resin. SILEX 70 is Plain Card Phenol based Phenolic Resins. They are Golden yellow in colour and are suitable for manufacturing Synthetic Hard Gloss Semi Darker & Darker Enamel Paints, Insulating Varnishes, Aluminum Medium etc., & are having outstanding Film Properties. They can be blended with any conventional Alkyds and Epoxies & can be used for making Lighter colour shades also & specially recommended for Marine Paints.
Card Phenol based resins have excellent resistance to the softening effects of mineral oils and high resistance to acids and Alkalis. They have antibacterial and insecticidal properties and good compatibility with other synthetic resins, such as alkyds, chlorinated epoxy rubber, Phenolic resins, etc. They can be used as raw materials for various paints. They are used to achieve the required gloss and flexibility, as well as having good mechanical strength, quick drying ability, rust and corrosion inhibiting properties, excellent resistance to water, acids, Alkalis and other chemicals. Cardanol-based resins are used as substitutes for alkyds in enamels and phenol in Phenolic resins.
Cardanol-based resins are used to achieve the required gloss, elasticity as well as good mechanical strength, have the ability to dry quickly, have anti-rust and corrosion inhibiting properties, excellent resistance to water, acids, Alkalis and other chemicals Used in the substitution reaction of alkyds in enamels.
COMPATIBILITY: These resins are compatible with all drying oils in all proportions like Linseed Oil, DCO, Soya etc., Their compatibility with other resins like Alkyds & Epoxies is also very good.
SOLUBILITY: SILEX 70 are soluble in most of the Aromatic & Aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents like Mineral Turpentine Oil (MTO), Mineral Spirits (MS), Xylene, Toluene, Solvent Naphtha etc.,
RECOMMENDED DRIERS: Driers added are 1% Lead, 0.5% Cobalt & 1.5% Manganese as metals in their Octoate and the varnish is left for 24 hours for ageing. These resins have very good film forming property like high gloss, better hardness and water/chemical resistance. These properties are beneficial to paint manufacturers as Card phenol resin is economical compared to conventional Alkyds. However pure Card phenol resin can be incorporated in regular paint formulation to reduce cost and adjust quality.
Cardanol Oil
CARDANOL (A NATURAL PHENOL)
Cardanol is a Natural Phenol obtained from Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL), a by product of the Cashew Nut Industry. It is considered eco-friendly for several reasons:
1.Renewable Sources: Cardanol is derived from a renewable and abundant natural source, Cashew Nut Shells, which helps reduce dependency on Fossil Fuels and non-renewable resources.
2.Biodegradability: Cardanol is Biodegradable, meaning it breaks down naturally in the environment, resulting in lower environmental impact compared to synthetic chemicals that may persist in ecosystems.
3.Low Toxicity: Cardanol is known to have low toxicity levels, making it safer for human health and the environment compared to some synthetics Phenolic compounds that can be harmful.
4.Versatile Applications: Cardanol has various applications in different industries such as Coatings, Adhesives, Surfactant's and Bio plastics, offering eco-friendly alternatives to Petroleum-based chemicals.
5.Green Chemistry: The process of extracting Cardanol from Cashew Nut Shells can be done using eco-friendly methods, aligning with the principles of Green Chemistry that aim to minimize waste energy consumption.
6.Sustainable Practices: Using Cardanol promotes sustainable practices by utilizing a byproduct that might otherwise have been considered waste, contributing to a circular economy approach.
Overall Cardanol as a Natural Phenol offers a range of eco-friendly benefits, making it a viable and sustainable choice for various applications across industries. Its renewable nature, biodegradability, low toxicity and versatility contribute to its eco-friendly profile.
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid Oil
CNSL (CASHEW NUT SHELL LIQUID)
INTRODUCTION:
The Crude/Raw CNSL (English: Cashew Nut Shell Liquid) is obtained by cold pressing or solvent extraction from Cashew Nut Shells. It comprises about 70% Anacardic acid, 18% Cardol, Cardanol 5%, and the remainder is composed of other compounds from the group of phenols, and polar compounds.
Technical CNSL (TCNSL) is obtained by further processing of the crude CNSL in the heating process, leading to Decarboxylation Anacardic acid, thus yielding a Cardanol. Technical CNSL contains about 52% Cardanol, Cardol 10%, 30% Polymeric material and the Residue is composed of other chemical compounds.
